Narrative Writing

You can’t edit a blank page. In order to become good writers, one has to actually begin writing.
Improvements can be made thereafter in the pursuit of becoming the ideal writer.
In today's class we focused on Narrative or Story writing which was very engaging and informative.
Narrative writing can be defined as a type of writing that tells a story.
We were given the opportunity to create a story map together with our lecturer and then we got the
chance to do so in pairs. We used acronyms such as FAST and STEAL to come up with all the elements of the
story. This proved to be very helpful causing us to think in depth of every aspect of the story we wanted
to tell. Upon reflection, it is important for the teacher himself/herself to understand the narrative writing
process in order to effectively and confidently teach the students.  This sets the foundation for the
students to become great writers. Narrative writing is a way for students to express their stories in a
creative way.
It allows the students to stimulate their thinking and imagination to foster their artistic expression.
It is also a way to teach students how to write following an organized process and clarifying their
thinking. This is a good way for students to explore many characters and different settings.
Narratives can be fact or fiction and is written to educate, motivate or entertain. The aim is to captivate
your audience and keep them engaged throughout the story.
Moreover, narrative writing allows the students to stimulate their imagination and to foster their artistic
expression. Further it allows students to express their stories creatively. This is also a good way to teach
students to express their thoughts in writing in an organized way. Thus, helping them to clarify their
thinking.

  1. Very detailed explanation of the acronym "FAST and STEAL". I can see this coming alive in the classroom in the teaching of narrative writing. Many times students (including ourselves) are under the impression that characters can only be described in terms of their physical traits. This is false as characters do have unique personalities and ways of thinking. This must also be included in the characterization in order to enhance characters' development and provide a vivid description of the character.

    Great job team!

  2. When teaching narrative writing, the acronym FAST and STEAL will be very convenient. This will help us as future Literacy teachers to instill in students how to come up with the elements that make up a story. I strongly agree with the statement that says, "narrative writing allows the students to stimulate their imagination and to foster their artistic expression". To add, Narrative writing will allow the students in the classroom to share their experiences with others, engage in creativity and to create suspense. It is important to remember that when one is writing a narrative piece the aim is to grab the readers attention at the beginning of the story , drawing them to your piece.

  4. Narrative writing can further be defined as writing that is characterized by a main character in a setting who engages with a problem or event in a significant way. Moreover, narrative writing consists of the author's purpose, tone, voice, structure, in addition to teaching sentence structure, organization and word choice which are part of the 6 + 1 traits of writing. Additionally, I agree to your point that narrative writing stimulates interest and allow the students to bring out their ingenuity. I also strongly believe that modelling narrative writing first to the students will help them produce a good piece when writing and will also help them to understand how narrative pieces should be read. Besides, this was a very interesting and well developed post!

  5. The narrative writing piece is made up of various parts which includes the characters which are essential because it is the driving force of the piece. Every narrative piece must feature conflict of any nature, which is usually between characters. however, it can also be between elements in the settings. Also, a plot is neccessary because it is the main point of the story. It highlights what is going to happen, which includes the conflict and solution. The setting is also an important part of the story as it determins where the story will take place. lastly, the narrative piece tells a story which has a moral which is also known as the theme of the story.

  6. When engaging students in narrative writing, they need to be aware of the elements of the elements needed to be included in their narrative piece. With such knowledge students will be able to produce clear pieces. As you mentioned in this entry, the use of FAST encourages in depth thinking of all the aspects needed to make the story come to life. Indeed, the teacher needs to have a well informed knowledge of narrative writing in order to engage students and have fun during this engagement. Good one put together guys!

  7. Narrative pieces are told from a defined point of view, often the author's, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. Before engaging students in writing a narrative piece they must first know the elements of a story. The elements of this piece must include the characters, setting, plot, conflict, solution and the moral. In your entry you have done a superb job at explaining the acronym names "STEAL and FAST" in detailed.Narrative writing allows students to express their stories creatively. It also help students clarify their thinking, and teach them to express that in writing in an organized way.As teacher we must remember modelling is important in writing any genre of writing and we must ensure that the proper model practice is done so students can comprehend and produce excellent pieces an become good writers. 8. All genres of writing can pose difficulties for students if not taught well. With effective modelling from the lecturer, I acquired information to teach narrative writing effectively. What really stood out for me in this session was the introduction of the acronyms F.A.S.T. and S.T.E.A.L. and the use of a story map. This was excellent and commendable. As a younger student, my narrative writing lacked so many elements. Sometimes the teacher would state that this story can be more interesting. The teacher did not provide me with the skills to do so. Learning these acronyms and more during subsequent sessions gave me the knowledge to effectively help students make their stories come alive, through the enhancement of the characters and the plot. I think if teachers of writing become well versed with those acronyms and the use of a story map there will be significant improvement in narrative writing.

  10. This was well put together. It had my attention from the very beginning. The acronyms are a very innovative way to organise the information to share with the intended audience. Narrative writing is important to help both the students and the teacher effectively clarify their thinking and express their stories in a creative and organised manner.
